What is a Rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic enhancement procedures desired by men and women. A nose job realigns the nose so that it addresses concerns of size and shape. However, a rhinoplasty is a complex procedure that requires your surgeon to sculpt nasal bones, remove or reshape nasal cartilage, and to create overall facial harmony and balance..

Dr. Chernoff may also recommend a septoplasty to rid patients with chronic sinusitis symptoms.

Who Can Benefit From a Rhinoplasty?

People of all ages may be troubled by the shape of their nose or their nose has a hump, a nose job can help shape and contour the nose so that is in balance and harmony with the face. Patients typically want a rhinoplasty to:

  • Reduce or increase the size of their nose
  • Change the size or shape of the nostrils, tip, or bridge of the nose
  • Alter the angle of the nose from one that points up or droops down
  • Correct a bulbous tip or hooked nose
  • Reduce a prominent dorsal hump
Multi-ethnic beauty. Different ethnicity women - Caucasian, African, Asian and Indian.

Many teenagers, ages 13 to 16, are interested in a rhinoplasty but their nose has not matured to its adult size and therefore, a rhinoplasty is not recommended by Dr. Chernoff for teens in this age range. Also, a patient’s emotional maturity and expectations plays a role in timing of a rhinoplasty.

During your consultation with Dr. Chernoff, he will discuss if you are a good candidate for a rhinoplasty.

Preparing for Rhinoplasty Surgery

Prior to any surgical procedure, Dr. Chernoff recommends that all our patients read our “Patient Guide for Plastic Surgery”. The guide explains important points that all patients should think about as they are considering a procedure.

How is a Rhinoplasty Performed?

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure that is performed under general anesthesia or twilight sleep. Dr. Chernoff advises patients that the rhinoplasty procedure performed decades ago seems crude and rudimentary when compared to what advanced technology allows him to do today. In the hands of an experienced facial plastic surgeon, the smaller cutting tools made from diamond, allows for more precision to skillfully craft tissues, bone, skin and cartilage of the patient’s nose to create the desired shape and contours. The incisions are made in the shape of a small “W” at the base of the tip of the nose and after two weeks may be barely seen.*

Some patients interested in a Rhinoplasty, may also benefit from chin augmentation. Dr. Chernoff provides patients with two options for chin augmentation. The most common method is using a chin implant. Dr. Chernoff has completed thousands of chin implant procedures by making a tiny incision inside the bottom gum line. Dr. Chernoff also can complete non-surgical chin augmentation using long-lasting volumizing dermal fillers.* Both options create facial harmony and balance to patients features.

Recovery Process

Patients have an improved experience before, during, and after their rhinoplasty procedure. Bruising and bleeding, which were a common part of the rhinoplasty procedure of old, are now kept to a minimum. And while a patient may experience some minor discomfort after the procedure, it is nowhere near the discomfort that used to be a common part of rhinoplasty recovery. Another plus, is that external fiberglass/colored splints are used which mean that no internal packing is required. You will wear a nasal splint for about a week.*

There will be minor bruising and swelling around your nose and around your eyes for between 10 to 14 days. During first few days after surgery, you will need to take it easy. As your body heals, you will gradually be able to increase your activity. After a few weeks, you can get back to strenuous activity as your nose continues to heal.*

Chernoff Cosmetic Surgery patients who travel to our Santa Rosa office for their Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery) can choose to stay in our Guest House after their procedure. Our staff will advise you with the details.
