Fat Transfer

Address Volume Loss with Your Own Fat!

As our bodies age, we begin to lose fatty tissue in our face and hands. The depletion of these fatty deposits can result in a hollow or “sunken” facial appearance and increase the visibility of veins and tendons on the hands.

At Chernoff Cosmetic Surgery in Santa Rosa there are many treatment options and injectable fillers that can help restore volume to these fat deficient areas, but the effects are usually temporary. Dr. Greg Chernoff, a triple-board certified plastic surgeon, offers autologous fat transfer to help add volume and contour back to fat deficient areas of the body. Fat transfer is an excellent way to restore lost facial volume and help you “Look Your Natural Best!”

What is Fat Transfer?

Autologous fat transfer uses excess fat found in the patient’s hips, thighs, abdomen, or buttocks to treat facial folds and wrinkles and provide additional volume or contour to the face or lips. The fat is harvested using Ultrasound Assisted Tumescent Liposuction or non-surgical needle aspiration and is purified before being re-inserted into the body.

Who Can Benefit From a Fat Transfer?

Men and women who are in good overall health who are looking to treat facial lines and wrinkles and/or add volume to various parts of the body are candidates for fat transfer. Fat transfer is an ideal option for patients looking for significant enhancement in volume.

Common areas for fat injections are:

  • Brow area
  • Under the eyes
  • Marionette lines
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Hands

Fat transfer is a good option for patients who are allergic to synthetic fillers as there is no risk of an allergic reaction because the fat is taken from the patient’s body. Fat transfer provides lasting results because the transplanted fat cells will develop their own blood supply and integrate themselves into their new location. Harvested fatty tissue can be stored for several months, so patients can receive “top up” procedures as needed.*

An added benefit of autologous fat transfer is the reshaping of the “donor” site with the removal of the harvested fat. Some of the common “donor” sites include:

  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Abdomen
  • Buttocks

How is Fat Transfer Procedure Performed?

First, the fat is harvested from the designated “donor” area. The harvested fat is then purified using a centrifuge or filter method. Once purified, the fat is injected into the area deficient of volume or fatty tissue. The re-inserted fat is then formed and sculpted to achieve the desired shape.

Preparing for Fat Transfer Surgery

Prior to any surgical procedure, Dr. Chernoff recommends that all our patients read our “Patient Guide for Plastic Surgery”. The guide explains important points that all patients should think about as they are considering a procedure.

What Results Can You Expect After Your Fat Transfer?

The potential side effects include minor swelling or bruising at the treatment site directly following treatment. These side effects typically resolve on their own and should subside within a few days of the treatment.*
