Otoplasty

Ear Shaping Surgery at Chernoff’s Facial Center of Excellence, Santa Rosa

The ears are an important aesthetic component of the face. For many people, large or protruding ears are not uncommon, and may cause some men and women to be self-conscious or uncomfortable about their appearance. The cause of large or protruding ears is usually due to excessive cartilage, or the way the cartilage is shaped. Defects of the ear, such as ‘cauliflower ear,’ and repair of injury can also be part of the otoplasty procedure.

At Chernoff’s Facial Center of Excellence in Santa Rosa, CA, Dr. Greg Chernoff offers ear surgery, or otoplasty, for adults to correct large, or excessively protruding ears.

What is Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) and How is It Performed?

Otoplasty is the procedure to modify the appearance of the external ear, especially the protruding ear. Otoplasty improves the shape, position and proportion of the ears. Although ear shaping is most often performed on children it is a procedure that can be done on adults, as well. For adults this surgery can usually be performed at any age.

During surgery, a small incision is made on the back of the ear to access the ear cartilage. Dr. Chernoff utilizes a combination of excess cartilage removal repositioning and shaping techniques to achieve the patient’s desired shape to the ear and correct the irregularities. This technique is concealed through a small incision on the back of the ear.

Preparing for Ear Surgery

Prior to any surgical procedure, Dr. Chernoff recommends that all our patients read our “Patient Guide for Plastic Surgery”. The guide explains important points that all patients should think about as they are considering a procedure.

After Otoplasty Surgery Care

Dr. Chernoff performs a gentle and comfortable otoplasty to make sure children and patients are completely at ease before, during and after the procedure. Patients can expect some swelling and bruising of the ears after the surgery which subsides within a few days along with mild discomfort. The swelling subsides within the first few days, and the bruising takes a few weeks. Significant pain is rare and medication can control any discomfort.*

Chernoff Cosmetic Surgery patients who travel to our Santa Rosa office for their Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) can choose to stay in our Guest House after their procedure. Our staff will advise you with the details.
