Breast Surgery
in Santa Rosa, CA

While the goal of a breast augmentation procedure is to provide women with long-lasting results, breast implants do not last forever.

Dr. Greg Chernoff advises patients that while some implants last for decades, others may need to be changed in a much shorter period of time.*

Who Needs Breast Implant Removal & Replacement Surgery?

There are several reasons a woman will need a breast implant removal. The primary reasons include:

  • Implant Complications
Complications include implant rupture, folding, or deflation. It doesn’t matter what type of implant you have as both saline and silicone implants can rupture.
  • Capsular Contracture
A hardening of the breast capsule results from scarring that forms around the breast implant. The condition is not dangerous but many women prefer that their breast implant be removed and replaced.
  • Personal Preference
Some women feel their breast implants are the wrong shape or size. Over time they may have moved into the wrong position because of weight loss, weight gain, or pregnancy.

Many breast implant removal patients are concerned that their breasts will sag or they will look deflated. Dr. Chernoff is a board-certified plastic surgeon who is experienced in breast implant removal surgery and techniques to restore a woman’s breast.

What Is Breast Implant Removal & Replacement Surgery?

Over time, women who have had breast augmentation surgery will ultimately need a breast implant revision procedure. This may include:

  • Removal of the implants and replacing with new implants
  • Removal of the implants without replacement
  • Reposition of existing implants

Implant Removal

It is imperative that ruptured implants be removed and/or replaced. In some cases, if gel implants have been left for many years, they can be difficult to remove and require additional time and expertise.

Capsular contracture is scarring that forms around the breast implant and for the majority of patients doesn’t bother them and is unnoticeable. However, for the small number of patients the capsule is firm and may feel like it shifts or contracts, and changes shape. The reason patients develop capsular contracture is unknown. It is not dangerous but, in most cases, patients prefer the removal of the implant.

Explant surgery, or En Bloc Capsulectomy, removes the implant and the capsule in one piece. Dr. Chernoff warns patients that this surgery is a meticulous procedure that removes the entire capsule along with the any part of the capsule and scar tissue attached to the chest wall and ribs. In some cases, it is necessary to repair the pectoralis muscle.

Implant Replacement

Patients may decide they would like smaller or larger implants. Additionally, some women who have saline implants may want to change to gel or what is referred to gummy bear implants.
Dr. Chernoff will discuss the specifics of your implant removal surgery and options available for replacement.
