Losing your hair can be a very emotional experience. Many people think that hair loss only affects men, but at least 40 percent of hair loss patients are women. There are many possible causes for female hair loss, including menopause, stress, illnesses like thyroid disease or anemia, or genetic predisposition to pattern hair loss. Most women going through hair loss do not experience a receding hairline or a balding spot at the top of the head, but rather experience a visible thinning of hair over the crown of the head. At Chernoff Cosmetic Surgery in Santa Rosa, we use the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) method to help our patients suffering from female hair loss achieve natural-looking hair restoration results.
What is Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)?
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a hair restoration technique that harvests 3,000 to 4,000 individual hairs in a single strip and transplants them into the area experiencing hair loss. The harvested follicles contain sebaceous glands, nerves, and a small muscle, which allows the body to recognize the transplant as the patient’s own and reduces the risk of the transplant being rejected. Follicular Unit Transplantation allows for the largest number of grafts to be transplanted in a single treatment session and generates long-lasting, natural looking and feeling results.

Dr. Chernoff will help each patient develop a customized treatment plan to help them achieve optimal results. Some patients may require a combination of FUT and non-surgical treatment options such as investigational treatment using adult-derived stem cells, or medical therapies like low-level laser light therapy (LLLT), DHT blockers, or Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). The combination approach to hair restoration requires a commitment to multiple treatments following the initial hair transplant.
Medical therapies that can be used in combination with Follicular Unit Transplantation include:
- Low-Level Laser Light Therapy (LLLT): Low-Level Laser Light therapy is a non-surgical treatment that uses an infrared light therapy to stimulate hair growth. LLLT can also slow the hair loss process and improve the quality and volume of hair.
- DHT blockers: DHT stands for dihydrotestosterone. High levels of this hormone can contribute to hair loss, as it can cause hair follicles to shrink and produce thinner hair. DHT blockers work by effectively reducing the amount of DHT in the body. By reducing the amount of DHT found in the body, hair follicles can return to their normal size and resume regular production. Our office recommends Nutrafol Supplement combined with FUE and other methods to improve hair growth and health.
- Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP): Platelet Rich Plasma contains about three to five the number platelets found in normal blood circulating in the body. It also contains other bioactive proteins and growth factors that help combat hair loss.
